Our eyes are lubricated by tears every time we blink.
Tears are made up of three different components.
A gland at the top of the eye produces water.
A gland in our eyelids produces an oil, and the whites of our eyes produce a mucus.
These mix together to create a film which lubricates the eye.
When we blink, the film is wiped across our eye by our eyelids.
If the constituents of the film are out of balance, it can result in sore, dry eyes.
Wearing sunglasses can help to reduce the speed at which the tears evaporate.
Applying eye drops will help lubrication.
Small plugs can be inserted into the tear ducts to slow down tear loss.
