Being interested in all things optical, we decided to start recommending books we have enjoyed reading, based around the theme of eyes. Here is our first – What Milo Saw by Virginia Macgregor.

Milo is 9 years old and sees the world very differently to most people. This is because he has a condition called retinitis pigmentosa, which he describes as looking through a “pinhole”. But Milo’s 92 year old gran has taught him that, although he cannot see everything around him, he should focus carefully on what he does see. Milo is a courageous, tenacious and very caring little boy, and the way he copes with his retinitis pigmentosa helps him to notice things other people miss; such as the way his 92 gran and are friends are treated in their nursing home. So it’s up to Milo to help them.

What Milo Saw is an uplifting, yet poignant read, where our hero’s triumphs are because of, rather than despite, the odds. There are some adult themes, making the story more suitable for teens and upwards.
